Celebrating International Women’s Day and the Women of Riverina Water

Mar 06, 2025

This International Women’s Day we celebrate those that march, protest, lobby, and petition for Women’s Rights across the globe. We acknowledge the journey to equality is continuing and reinforce our commitment as an equal opportunity employer, with values that extend beyond the workplace.

This year’s theme ‘March Forward: For ALL Women and Girls’ serves to remind that the world cannot afford to take a step back and must continue to push for a future of empowerment and equal opportunity where which no one is left behind.

Today we celebrate our inspirational female staff and would like to introduce you to our Water Quality Technician, Rebeccah, who is one of two females in our Water Quality Team.

Rebeccah pursued her love of science by completing a Bachelor of Medical Science at the University of Canberra and never thought she would find herself in the water industry.

“I love my job, it provides the perfect balance of being out in the field and in the labs, it’s pretty hard to beat,” she said.

In high school and university, Rebeccah’s science classes were male dominated, but she didn’t let this deter her.
Rebeccah’s message to girls who enjoy or excel in science is simple:

“Science is for everyone. There are so many career opportunities that you won’t know about until you get into the field.

“Encourage girls and women to take up space and not shy away from studying subjects that are typically male dominated.”

Rebeccah’s experiences in male-dominated workplaces have been mostly positive and shares that knowing your boundaries is important.

“Don’t be afraid to have boundaries,” she said.

“The men I’ve worked with have been respectful, look out for me and encourage me. Even as I became a mum of two, I feel supported and haven’t been treated any differently.”

What does International Women’s Day mean to Rebeccah?

“It’s a day to celebrate the achievements of women who paved the way for us to have opportunities. It’s also a global reminder that there’s so much more work to be done.

“When I think about equality in the world of STEM, work needs to be done to address the gender-gap. Sadly, girls have fallen behind in math and science. From a young age, girls should be encouraged to explore and see themselves represented in non-traditional roles.

“This year’s theme, March Forward, is especially meaningful as we are experiencing events that are putting pressure to rewind the progress made. We need to continue the work of the women before us to and continue to push for fairness and equality.”
