Beginning our journey of Reconciliation

Apr 07, 2025

On March 27, Riverina Water celebrated the launch of its Reflect Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP).

Joined by Wiradyuri and First Nations Peoples – including Elders,  Mawang Gaway and students from Ashmont Public School – the day marked the beginning of a shared journey towards reconciliation.

Riverina Water CEO Andrew Crakanthorp said that in launching its Reconciliation Action Plan, Riverina Water commits to reconciliation and in doing so, acknowledges the truths and injustices that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people experience.

“Our Reconciliation Action Plan marks our commitment to reconciliation, through reflection, truth telling and collaboration” Mr Crakanthorp said.

“We must listen to and respect their voices, have the courage to self-reflect and commit an equal and equitable future.

“At Riverina Water, we are committed to building relationships, respect, and opportunities through our Reconciliation Action Plan.”

Developed in consultation with the First Nations community, the Reflect RAP focuses on four key areas – relationships, respect, opportunities and governance.

“We are very grateful to those who have guided us along the way, including the Wiradyuri reference group, Mawang Gaway, who provided invaluable insight during the drafting of this plan. Their wisdom and input have been essential in shaping our commitments,” Riverina Water Deputy Chairperson Cr Gail Driscoll said.

“As a drinking water provider, we recognise the cultural and spiritual significance of water for First Nations Peoples. Water is more than a resource – it is our lifeblood, a connection to Country, and a source of knowledge.

“Through this plan, we aim to deepen our understanding of these connections and ensure our role as a water steward is one of respect and inclusion.

“This plan is just the beginning, and we look forward to the work ahead as we walk this path together.”

Throughout the year, Riverina Water’s Reconciliation Action Plan Working Group will work towards delivering on the actions in the RAP and begin development of its next plan.
